Answers

Why does mkv ask me to choose a folder?
Mac App Store apps can read only what you give them. Choose a folder once, with File > Open or by dropping it on mkv, and mkv remembers it: every document inside opens from then on, and stays live as it changes.
A linked document or image says it is unavailable
It lives outside the folders you have given mkv. Choose Grant Access to This Folder in the message, and mkv can show everything in that folder from then on.
How do I put the mkv command on my path?
Open Settings > Integrations. Under Command line, copy the line it shows into your terminal. Then mkv open plan.md:40 opens a file at line 40. See For agents for more.
Will mkv ever change my files?
No. mkv reads Markdown and never writes to it. Comments you send are kept by mkv, not written into your documents.
Does mkv play .mkv videos?
No. mkv is short for MarKdown Viewer. It opens Markdown files, and has nothing to do with the Matroska video format.
How do I restore my purchase on another Mac?
Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account, open mkv's settings and choose Restore Purchases.
What do I need to run mkv?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on an Apple silicon or Intel Mac.
Where does mkv keep its settings, and how do I reset it?
In its own container in your Library, which macOS manages. To start afresh, quit mkv and delete ~/Library/Containers/ followed by mkv's folder; your documents are not affected.
